Objectives

The Global Village project will allow young people from all parts of Europe, together with their peers from other parts of the world, to collaborate in large-scale informal educational project over a period of 12-18 months.

The aims of the project are three-fold:

  • AWARENESS
    To significantly raise participants' awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and the issues involved in realizing them, with special attention to the role of children and youth in this process.
  • EMPOWERMENT
    To motivate participants through practical, first-hand experience of projects and activities which represent good practice in tackling the MDG challenges;
  • ACTION
    To engage participants in on-going actions and projects designed to further the MDGs - at individual, community, national, and international levels.

The anticipated learning outcomes are:

  • An understanding of the causes and effects of the way in which the world's peoples are differentially affected by the challenges of globalization.
  • An understanding of the causes and effects of the social and economic relationships which result in conflict, poverty, exploitation, and social exclusion;
  • Knowledge and experience of the problems faced by young people and their communities in the developing world;
  • Knowledge and experience of youth initiatives which seek to combat poverty and promote human security, global democracy, and encourage good practise in co-operative and non-violent lifestyles, with the objective of disseminating these ideas and programmes more widely.

It is anticipated that participants will develop a keen awareness of the responsibilities of the developed world towards the less developed nations. The way in which this relationship is rapidly changing as a result of globalisation will be one of the key issues for the programme.

The programme will give all participants the opportunity to experience international co-operation through both face-to-face encounters and projects using new communication technologies.
